Synopsis:

This animated installation will explore the relationship between projected animation and the non-traditional materials on to which it is projected.  I will be examining what ‘the screen’ means in animation and how it can add dimension to my work.

By utilizing certain materials and their implied symbolism or history (and potency in my own personal experience), I hope to create a conversation and deeper relational meaning between the projected image and the material that shows (and often, distorts) the image.

This series of experiments will involve hand drawn animation, sculptural elements, and a level of interactivity.

Core Concept:

This piece will be experimental in its process and fluid in it’s progression.  I will secede my control of the aesthetic to the nature of the process.

I will be creating hand-drawn, realistically-rendered animated loops that fluctuate between realistic and surreal motion.  These will be projected through or on materials such as: honey, milk, sand, glitter, broken glass, chiffon, fabric frozen in dye, found/discarded objects.  These substances/objects will serve to add dimension and distort the animated image.
By examining certain materials and their implied symbolism or history (and potency in my own personal experience), I hope to create a conversation and deeper relational meaning between the projected image and the material that shows (and often, distorts) the image.

This project is rooted foremost in my exploration of animated installation work.  By removing animation from it’s screen, and instead allowing it to rest on more influential materials, the viewer will be able to experience the animated visual in a more tactile way.
For example, by creating a shadow box filled with honey, and allowing the honey to drip down the wall, I am creating another dimension of time and movement.  Because of this, the looped animated projections will continuously change as the material shifts and evolves.

This project is also interested in maps, diagrams, and time-keeping devices —  and especially in relation to geographic space and the physical mind and body.  The animated loops will be representative of this interest.

Reflecting on my past work, I want to build academically on certain core concepts: psycho-geography, theories of psychological evaluative systems, and feminist/queer theory.  This research will help inform my decisions throughout the project.  This project is also visually and conceptually influenced by Tony Oursler, Kiki Smith, Robert Gober and Cory Imig.
